Chapter 9

Forty five minutes earlier after Celinda and the boys walked away Paul turned towards Nicolas, his fist raised. “If you ever speak to Celinda again like that. or do or say anything in front of her brothers in the way you did tonight, I will punch you black and blue. I’ll render you unconscious. I think I’ll do it now.”

“As I said to that baby, you and whose army?” Nicolas looked round at his friends. “I think you’re a bit outnumbered here.”

“Why? Can’t you fight your own battles?”

“Get him,” Nicolas said and the group moved forward, tall young men, some of whom were quite a few years older than Nicolas. Paul was never sure what they saw in him, that is, if they were genuine friends. They probably got something out of him which kept them with him. Maybe drinks in the saloon? He knew they spent quite a bit of time there.

They leapt at him and he ran for a tree. Get something behind him so they couldn’t attack the back, which would give him a chance. It impeded their attack and they were only able to come at him one at a time.

He floored three of them before the sheriff ran across the field, and had to concede he was pleased at the sight of him. He might have knocked some down but he had taken quite a few punches, one of which nearly winded him. The sheriff shot into the air and the men drew back.

“What’s going on here?” he asked.

“He attacked us,” Nicolas said. “We were just defending ourselves, that’s all.”

Which didn’t include Nicolas, Paul had noticed, because he never did seem to do anything hands on. He noticed that when he observed a couple of their brawls.

“He attacked you.” The sheriff was obviously not convinced. “Go home, all of you, before I put you in the lockup.”

“We haven’t done anything.”

“You’ve done plenty. Get.”

The men turned away and aimed for the direction of the saloon. To make more trouble, Paul suspected, but that wasn’t his problem. Sheriff Donavon Gould turned to Paul after they left.

“Do you want to make any charges?”

Paul shook his head. “No.”

“They’re trouble, the lot of them. I suspect they’ll be at the dance on Friday but I’ll keep a good eye on them.”

“Thank you, sheriff.”

Paul turned away, decidedly bruised, with a bit of blood coming through his shirt where one of the men had hit him with the buckle of his belt. Nicolas should not be with those men and he was looking for trouble himself if they suddenly turned on him. They were a noisy, drunken lot with none of them married. Probably because of lack of women which wasn’t bad because he wouldn’t wish them on any female.

He needed babying but he didn’t want to worry his mother. His back was smarting where he had constantly been pushed against the tree, his knuckles hurt and he was sure his face was swelling. Going for the clean clothes he brought with him he made for the house of the Blantyres.
